Jan Retires from an Amazing Career of Special Ed Teaching
(Click above to read about Jan's career!)

Retirement is truly the BEST!  For all of you that have not tried it yet, you don't know what you are missing, and for those of you still working - my deepest sympathies!!!!

Teaching was an incredible profession and I loved it - and still do, but now it's time to move on to the next chapter in my life.  That being said -

I was diagnosed with a connective tissue disorder called Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome in 2005.  It is similar to rheumatoid arthritis in many aspects - a lot of pain is involved.  I found that if we stayed in a warmer climate I felt 100% better and had a great deal less pain.  John and I began our quest to find our choice of a place to stay at least for the winters.  We loved California, but San Diego, my favorite town was just a little out of our price range so we started back to the Eastern section of the South.  I couldn't tolerate Arizona for too long because it was too dry for me - Texas - not my favorite place - windy and dry - Louisiana - really didn't like the area at all - Florida - tooooooo humid for me most of the time.  Then we drove through Alabama and Georgia - loved them both!  Friends of ours lived in Alabama for the past three years and we visited the state for a few months two winters ago!  I fell madly in love with Alabama and convinced John to settle here for the winters, at least!  We visited, bought, and didn't miss Illinois enough to live in two places, so we sold our home in Illinois and moved to Cullman, Alabama on December 27th, 2010!  If ever you are on I-65 heading South or North and hit exit 308 in Alabama, please look us up - we'd love to have you and show you some real down South-Southern hospitality!

2006

I am currently teaching at Carl Sandburg H.S. in Orland Pk, IL.  My students are multi-needs high schoolers so I teach, as well as being an inclusion facilitator for classes they take in the regular curriculum of the building.  I have been married to the same man, (I know - rather boring existence, huh) for the past 32 years.  John does have a really interesting profession, however.  He owns three old-fashioned candy stores - imagine my dad was an ice cream man and my husband is a candy man!  That's why I am a fat old lady.  We have no children, but have always had a dog - always Boxers, just like when I was a kid.  The current wonder dog is 13 ½ years old, very unusual for a Boxer - they usually live only 8-10 years!  She doesn't eat any dog food, so go figure - she eats what we eat.  She doesn't realize she is a dog and I don't have the heart to tell her. My husband and I love to travel and he is also a scuba diver, so warm water places are high on our list.
